1.11.2021

We have an action packed episode this week, please tell your friends to tune in and get all the up-to-date information.

The Past Week's Events: This past week has been a difficult one to discuss with students for the most seasoned of educators. Linked below are some classroom resources that might help you lay the groundwork for a discussion if you are inclined to do so. However, if you are in a class where the subject matter does not pertain directly to these happenings feel free to direct the students to your class materials. If you are not comfortable facilitating a discussion where there may be a myriad of viewpoints, please do not feel like you need to do so.

Facing History in Ourselves

A 2020 Holdover - As I did at home, and I am sure many of you did during the last calendar year, I would like to look to make some décor improvements to the campus. I would like to bring more art and color into the halls and onto the campus.

  • Thank you to the carpentry department led by Derek as well as Jerry Shaw, and Rob Gentile and MET #1 for moving forward on the final touches for the bulletin boards in the main office.
    • They will be creating "Hall of Fame" and "SST Small Business Owners" boards.
  • I would like to make use of the space above the lockers in the hallways to promote our school and its activities.
    • Signs/murals/vinal lettering such as "Viking Pride," "Work Ethic Matters" and "No Excuses" could fill the space. (We will need to be aware of fire regulations on the amount of paper.)
    • Headshots identifying the student council leadership.
    • Action photos of extracurricular programs/athletics/drama/etc.
    • Shop production items/photos to be displayed.
  • Dressing up of the cement columns in the 300 building with artistic designs.
  • A piece of metal artwork designed and created through the MFW program to be placed outside the Principal's office.
Shops should consider how they can provide some visual highlights to all the great things we do. I envision the ability to change over hallway items, much like a website, to keep the presentation fresh for ourselves, but as well as any guests in the building.

Special Ed Progress Reports are due 1/29/21.  Please send Katie and Nancy an email when your assignment list is completed. You do no need to print nor sign the reports.

Special Education Educational Assessment B's need to be completed prior to Team meetings. The Google invitation means you have an Ed. Assessment to do.

If a student with a disability has a counseling and/or speech and language service listed in their IEP,  our specialists need to meet with the student exactly how the IEP states. This could be in various settings: individually, small group, or in the classroom.  Please work collaboratively with Angela Chiarelli and/or Nicole Goulart to ensure students plans are followed.

Department Head Meeting, Tuesday, the 12th, at 2:35 pm.

National Honor Society Induction Ceremony will take place Tuesday night at 6:30 pm remotely. The students below are being inducted, if you would like to attend place let Mark know and he will add you to the invite list.

Social Distancing is a priority throughout the day. Please remember for the students to keep at least a 3 ft. distance when they are in the shop and classrooms. When they are on break please make sure they do not huddle together and keep a 6 ft distance. Please limit your contact with students throughout the day as well.

Guidance/Mental Health schedule - The Student Services Suite led by Angela C. will begin making presentations to students on mental health and support systems they can access. In order to social distance the students we will need to make use all spaces and divide classes into 2 sections.

This very important work will take place for sophomores and juniors in some shops this week and will continue for the rest of the month until all students have been given access.  Thank you for your understanding and support.

From the Vocational Office:

Benchmark Assessments-. Benchmark assessments should be logged into PowerSchool and should include a pretest, a formative assessment and a summative assessment (grades do not need to count towards final grade) there should be at least one benchmark assessment per each grade level. Benchmarks for each course and grade level need to be documented here by 1/15.

Shop Spacing- Students in shop and/or related classrooms should be spaced a minimum of 3’ apart at all times throughout the day, whenever possible, students should be spaced even further apart ideally at least 6’. As instructors please keep in mind that you should also keep a 6’ foot distance between students and yourself throughout the day.

Safety Test- All students across all grade levels within your shop program need to have safety tests on file. These tests need to be completed on an annual basis. Please make sure your tests are up to date and uploaded/stored into the Teacher Curriculum- Vocational Teacher Drive.

Program IRC’s- Please make sure student IRC’s are being documented and progress is being updated within the Teacher-Curriculum- Vocational Teacher Drive.

Cooperative Education Update- We have launched a new co-op website here, please check it out! As of January 8th we currently have 60 seniors who are signed out and participating in the SST Co-op program. These students have earned a combined income of over $183k and logged over 12,000 hours on the job! Please note, juniors will be eligible to participate in co-op starting the week of January 25th. If you know a junior or senior student interested in participating please send the student name in an email to vocoffice@ssvotech.org so we can reach out to start the process.
