5.6.19

From Mark's desk:

Teacher Appreciation Week: Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to one and all! This Friday there will be a light lunch served in the teacher's room to honor your efforts. You are asked to please attend during your lunch period as food will be placed out twice during the lunch window and more can not be made. As always, we thank you for all your hard work during this week and every other day of the year.

If you haven't already done so, you will be meeting with your evaluator in the coming weeks to discuss your progress. Please be sure to be gathering your materials, be it a binder or documentation on SMART goals for discussion. If you have any concerns, now is the time to reach out to your evaluator with those clarifying questions.

I will be in academic PLCs starting tomorrow to train staff on the CBT (computer-based test) Mathematics test scheduled on Tuesday & Wednesday May 21st and 22nd. Please bring the test booklets you recieved during the ELA testing in March.

Below is an updated chart of the classes, classrooms and proctors. Please take a look.

Child Labor Laws

As we approach summer many of our students will be looking to work.  This may be there first job. And even if it is not you may find yourself being asked questions by your students about the work they are doing.

Below is a link that addresses child labor laws in Massachusetts.

Respect and Support: Embracing Individual Differences and Choices By Barbara J. Green Ph.D., YHC We know that it is much more important what one does with educational opportunity than where one goes. We know that college is not for everyone and that success in life is not measured by an Ivy League degree. By embracing individual differences and choices we give respect and lend support. By acknowledging that there is no one size fits all approach we open our teens to the myriad of options that allow for open exploring to find what is right. Happiness in adulthood is not measured by how much money we have or the job title we have. Happiness comes from feeling good about oneself, having loving, positive relationships, having purpose and meaning, living mindfully with a healthy lifestyle, being able to feel optimistic and balanced, having compassion and empathy for others, for demonstrating kindness and patience. All these qualities contribute to resilience and grit. This is what we want our senior students to have as they embark on decisions and next steps. We are with you and behind you cheering you on, one baby step at a time.

Positive Postcards

How many positive postcards do you have left in your desk drawer, the end of the year is fast approaching, kids are anxious about leaving their school behind, what better way to let them know they are ready to take on the world than by sending them a positive postcard.  Thank you Leeanne for sharing your response last week.

The Positivity Project!

What better way to celebrate our students by launching The Positivity Project to tell our students that they truly matter?

Your Mission:

  1. Select a student who makes you want to come to work, be a better person, be a better educator, coach etc
  2. Figure out how you want to express these feelings in a 30-40 second video clip.  You can prepare notes to read to your student or improvise it. Focus on all the positives this student brings to your class or space.  Please encourage a shaking of hands at the end of the video.
  3. Record your student choice on the GoogleSheet.  Please attempt to spread the love as much as possible.  Maybe consider spreading the praise to an underdog who might not get as much attention as another student who is always in the limelight.  Maybe consider your “worker bee” who does everything in his/her power to constantly do his/her best. Maybe consider the student who really needs to know that his/her efforts have not gone unnoticed.
  4. Find a video buddy.  This can be done by asking someone to use their cell phone to record your interaction, or your cell phone.   It’s best if your video buddy records your interaction over your shoulder and focuses on the student reaction, and face.  Kristin, Sandy, and Suzanne, are available to help as video buddies as our schedules allow.
  5. Please reach out to a parent/guardian of your student if it’s ok to post a video to social media.  These clips will be posted to our website, and SST’s social media accounts. We can’t post video clips of students in the public domain unless the parent says this is allowed.  Please note this is approved, and who approved it, on the GoogleSheet.
  6. Email your video to Joe E. Marani.  Joe E. has graciously offered to edit our videos into a series of clips to show how much our kids mean to us.
