3.4.19

From the desk of the Principal, Mark

Thank you to all those who took the time and participated in the recent staff survey. As I promised, I have included a link to all of the results.

Survey Results

The administrative team has reviewed the results and all the comments and already addressed a number of the building concerns. As with almost any survey your responses have created new or clarifying questions. Over the coming month, the administrative team will be going to PLCs and Department Meetings to gain a better understanding of the feelings behind some of the staff responses.

MCAS Trials: We will be running an MCAS trial in the coming days during 9th period and people around the water cooler are talking about the shutting off of the internet. This is not true. We may ask that phones be turned off, but we will not be altering the curriculum.

New Bulletin Board Design: You have probably noticed the work being done by Carpentry on the first board in the front hallway. At the top of these new boards, we are going to display an emblem of each shop cut out on a CNC machine. I ask that each shop thinks about what their 9" diameter emblem would look like. Is it something you already have in your shop uniform or do you need to design something new.

5 Days of Activities Into 4 days of Fun:

Tuesday-Thursday:  Freshmen will be taking part in SBIRT. This is a survey to measure drug and alcohol usage amongst young people. This testing will be taken in by members of the Student Service Suite, Colette Worrall, and Mike Clark.

Thursday-Friday: We have 3 students taking the MCAS Math retakes.

Friday: NAEP is back. Once again, this is the testing that measures student performance vs. other students throughout the country. A number of students, chosen by the state, will be taking this test on Friday. I will provide an accurate list as we get closer, but keep it on your radar.

Job Skills 2019 will take place next week. This is a junior ELA/SHOP assignment. As you know some projects take place in the classroom, others are presented in the shop. To schedule effectively we will NOT rotate the schedule next week. Go see a few if you are able to: Job Skills Schedule 2019

From the desk of the Vocational Coordinators (Keith Boyle, Bob Foley)

Cooperative Education: We currently have over 70 students participating in the schools' co-op program! If you know a junior or senior student who might be interested in co-op please have them visit the Vocational Office to get a head start on their paperwork.

At this point in the school year, it’s important to take a moment and talk to your seniors with regards to what their plans might be for after graduation. We want to make sure ALL of our students are set up for success whether they are going to college, military or joining the workforce.

Uniforms: Please continue to enforce your shop uniform policy. Freshman should continue to wear their exploratory shirts until their new shop uniforms arrive.

SkillsUSA: Congratulations to the students who competed at District One competition at Greater New Bedford Voc. on Friday! The students were awarded 33 medals of which 11 were gold, 14 were silver and 8 were bronze.

We entered 34 competitions and won medals in 15 contests.  Of these 34 contests, there was a total of 108 medals that could have been won, and we took 33 of them.  Impressive results!!!!

There were a total of 63 contests at our District Competition, we look forward to working with everyone to see how many more contest we can place students into next year.

There are approximately 38 additional contests at States that students may be eligible for. These competitions do not have a District Qualifier see Lisa B. for more information on what is available to our students.

We also have two students who are waiting to see if they qualified for SkillsUSA Student Advisory Council, and we also have Jess Silva who won a Silver Medal in the State Trading Pin Design Contest earlier in the year.

Excellent job to the entire staff of South Shore Tech who continue to support these students!
