11.5.18

From the desk of the Principal, Mark

The Midterm is on Friday, November 9th. Please make sure your grades are up-to-date because these are the grades we use for eligibility.

Thank yous all around.

Thank you to the staff who came out Friday night and supported our volleyball team. It was a great match and although we ended up on the wrong end of the final score the atmosphere was fabulous. I hope in the future this is something that becomes the norm at South Shore Technical. (for my friends in attendance I am going to get rally towels on the VAA sales list.)

  • The district, along with the Parent's Association, Viking Athletic Association, and the Athletic program, is at the beginning of a long process to place lights on our football field. Imagine the possibilities and school culture when SST becomes a destination on Friday night and every night for our students, staff, and community. This is one of my long-term goals for our school.
Thank you to all the staff who brought about a great Homecoming Dance for our students and their friends. Almost 400 young people came to school on Saturday Night and danced the night away and had a fun time.

This upcoming Saturday the football team will be playing Southeastern at home. This will be senior day for our football and cheerleading corps. Please join us and celebrate these students efforts over the past four years as we recognize their achievements with the parents.

From the desk of Assistant Principal, Sandra Baldner

PLC TOPICS November 5-9

Standards-based grading - What does this look like in your program? In PowerSchool?
Budget Review - Total requests exceed expected budget. Can adjustments be made?
Paper reduction practices - What are you doing? What else can be done?
MidSemester Grades Due Friday
Rigor - What does it mean? What does it look like in your program?

Paper! Where's the paper?

Delivery Delay - There is a concern about running out of paper as our scheduled deliveries have been running slow. Use - While we've done a good job providing access to instructional resources online, it has not decreased our paper use. Please place a critical lens on your practices. No one is saying NO PAPER, but do you have routines that you can adjust to further decrease your paper footprint? Have scanned your multiple choice tests into Mastery Connect or input them on Google Forms? This will save time and trees!

Student of the Month - PLEASE DO nominate one! November Student of The Month

FREE SEI COURSE FOR CTE EDUCATORS: LINK TO FREE SPRING 2019 COURSE
ALL CTE educators are encouraged to register for a free course either for Spring or Fall 2019.
Educators who currently have an English Language Learner in their program should register first. Feel free to reach out to me with questions.

Teaching a struggling reader, speaker, or writer?
Looking for strategies to engage them? Please do not hesitate to reach out to our SEI instructor, Lin Ann Hutchinson for ideas. In the last two-week, we've discussed and she's implemented a strong vocabulary lesson is Social Studies, a partnered reading/summarizing activity in ELA, and is planning a think-aloud lesson in Carpentry Related. These SEI lesson strategies can be applied in any content for any student struggling with content.

Pineapple Charting

What's the point? There are many! First, it provides educators with an invitation to see various instructional practices. Also, it provides the admin team an opportunity to walk through when you are teaching a lesson that you are proud of.  Keep the welcome signs coming! Invite your colleagues with an email that includes, who, what, when, and where. This way even folks who can't make it, but are curious about the strategy can reach out at another time. The real goal is cross content educator conversations about instructional practices that work for our students.

Cooperative Education
We officially have 45 seniors signed out on co-op. Those seniors have logged a collective 2,950 hours and earned a cumulative $37,778. If you have a senior interested in co-op please have them visit the Vocational Office.

Fall Advisory Dinner and Meetings
Thank you for an excellent evening and a job well done. A special thanks to the Culinary shop for an excellent dinner and the Horticulture shop for providing fall decorations for the cafeteria. We had over 86 advisory board members present at the meeting and this could not have been done if it wasn’t for the efforts of the teachers and student ambassadors of the shop programs.

Math & English MCAS Re-test
Our first round of MCAS re-test dates are approaching quickly.  Thank you teachers and paraprofessionals for your support with preparing our students for these tests, and for your flexibility to allow these students to leave your program in order to prepare for MCAS.  All hands on deck at SST!     Mark and I will reach out to MCAS proctors and will provide a proctor training on Wednesday.

Test dates:
ELA: November 8, 9, and 13
Math: November 14 and 15

Team Meeting Educational Assessment B Forms
When you receive a Google invitation for an IEP meeting, please remember to complete the Educational Assessment B form immediately in Power School - Special Education.  Without the Educational Assessment B form, we cannot discuss the current academic performance and appropriate classroom accommodations.  Last March, DESE's visit to SST assured me that our records are reviewed with a fine tooth comb.  I ask for your help with staying in compliance.

From the entire administrative team have a great week and an even better long weekend - Happy Veteran's Day!
