A message from Keith Boyle, Vocational Coordinator.

As the end of summer is quickly approaching , I wanted to take a minute and introduce myself while also welcoming everyone back to South Shore Tech for the 2018/2019 school year! I hope you all had a great summer and are all ready for the school year to start next week!

Over the summer I have had the opportunity to meet several of you, but for those who I haven't met, my name is Keith Boyle and I am one of the new Vocational Coordinators here at SST. I come from a vocational background both as a student (Norfolk Aggie & the Stockbridge School of Agriculture) and as a teacher (Horticulture/Upper Cape Tech.) I am excited to share my experiences and backgrounds while learning more about the school, staff, students and culture here at South Shore Tech.

I hope you all enjoy the last week of summer and are looking forward to another successful year of instruction and student learning.

I’m looking forward to meeting you all next week!

A message from Bob Foley, Vocational Coordinator

Welcome back South Shore Technical Staff, I am excited to here and looking forward to having and helping everyone have an awesome 2018-2019 school year.

Everyone has a why, my why is that I believe our students today are our future right now. The manner in which we mold, teach and shape our student will definitely will definitely have a deep impact on our future.

Bob Foley

Hi Staff,

I hope your summer vacation allowed you the opportunity to rest and recharge for another school year.  I like to think that my ‘New Year Resolutions’ begin in September opposed to January as I set professional and student goals for the school year.

This year, the special education department hopes to join a district initiative in going green.  We are in the process of working with Docusign and Power School Special Education to take a paperless route, and email all documents to parents.

The new ‘Student Services Suite’, old ‘Guidance Suite’ has been completely remodeled and houses new faces.  A huge thank you to Bob Moorehead and his team for all of their hard work throughout the summer! I look forward to sharing all of these changes with you in detail next week!

As you begin to plan or tweak your first cycle lesson plans, please remember to think about how you will incorporate inclusive practices and differentiated instruction into your classroom routines, and how you will accommodate students on IEP’s and/or 504’s.

If you are co-teaching this year, please begin to think about how you will communicate with your co-teacher throughout the day, and your plan of action for sharing joint lesson plans with one another and your supervisor.

As you know, September will bring a new group of freshman to our halls.  Please take the time to get to know them, read their IEP’s, and be patient with them as they transition into a new school.  Our special education liaisons will be around to introduce themselves to you and support you with best practices throughout the school year.

I look forward to seeing all of you on Tuesday.
Happy Labor Day!
Katie

Overarching Elements for the 2018-2019 School Year

Admin Team Goal
The building administrative team worked together to develop one team goal. You can expect to see these outcomes in our community in the coming weeks and months.

The South Shore Tech administrative team will improve internal and external communication evidenced by:

  • A 100% increase in our social media followers (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google Apps)  by May 1, 2018.

  • The development of a weekly administration blog to communicate with all staff. Implementation goal September 1, 2018.

  • The implementation of  regular parentlink communication to parents identifying key information for the days ahead, and summarizing the events of the days prior.  October 1, 2018 implementation goal.

  • The implementation of a weekly parentlink communication to students by grade level  highlighting all student activities coming soon, and a summary of all recent events impacting the grade level. October 1, 2018 implementation goal.

  • The development and implementation of a educators communication log that will be shared by educator with counselling team. October 1, 2018 implementation goal.

  • Regular assessment of practices through a minimum of 1 formal and 2 informal staff, student, or parent surveys by May 1, 2018. Results will be used to adjust practice.

PD Focus for 18-19
We will focus on best practices in all areas of educator strengths include those we investigated in Spring 2018
  • Instructional Strategies
  • Instructional Technology
  • Flipped Classroom
  • How to Ask “Good” Questions
  • Grading Practices
  • Co-Teaching

We will also be focussed in all programs to continue to grow our SGP for all student on MCAS. In addition to Study Island, we will be implementing (starting in ELA) MyAccess, an online writing resource. The goal is to continue to improve student outcomes as we transition to many web-based tests.

Finally, we will be hosting a NEASC 5-year review. We will provide PLC and PD time as needed to ensure a successful visit.

Walkthrough 18-19
As we’ve done for the past few years, we’ll continue monthly walkthroughs by any member of the admin team. In September please expect a Walkthrough Note from your evaluator. Please do not be surprised to see a veteran and an newer administrators walking through together.

In an effort to develop discussions about instructional practices your Walkthrough Note may  include a question. If it does it will be followed with a statement that encourages you to set up a meeting if you want one, or feel free to response to the question right in the form. Also, you will notice an adjustment to the Notes Form in TeachPoint, it now allows an educator response to any posted note. This form will used to communicate on areas of the profession that may not be a part of a walkthrough.

While you and your evaluator may focus on other areas for growth, this school year we will focus our random walkthroughs on the following:
  • Safe Classrooms/Shops
  • Inclusive Practice (link)
  • Bell to Bell Instruction
  • Student Engagement
  • Objectives Posted and Understood

Definitions

SEI Endorsement - this means that your are endorsed by MA DESE to have a an EL student in
your program. Professional status educators must become fully endorsed 1 year from an EL
student being seated in his/her classroom. Nonprofessional status educators must be endorsed
by July 2021.

15-Hour Course - Provides educators without and EL in their course the opportunity for relicensure.
If you took the SEI course with Kristin Bateman then you have met this requirement for the licensure
cycle you took the course. You must take 15 hours of SEI PD in every licensure cycle, even after
you’ve become endorsed.

45-Hour or Full Course - These DESE approved courses/programs allow the successful student to
apply for SEI endorsement. Required within 1-year of an EL being seated in any educator course.

SEI MTEL - A test that can be taken in lieu of taking a course and can be used as evidence to
support SEI Endorsement in MA.

Other Notes and FAQ’s

Recertification note - ALL educators “must earn 15 PDPs addressing the needs of English language
learners in each relicensure cycle.” What does this mean? If you took a course for SEI endorsement
(regardless of 15 hours or more) before your last certification, you must take an additional 15 hours of SEI
PD in your current licensure cycle. (See link above for PD offerings)

Do I have to take an SEI course? Yes. All educators must take a 15-hour course to relicense.
If you took a class at SST with Kristin Bateman you have met the licensure requirement for that
recertification cycle. To become endorsed, you must take a full course (45-hours) or pass the
SEI MTEL, submit your endorsement request to MA DESE and be approved.

How do I get an SEI Endorsement?  You may qualify for an SEI Endorsement by 1 of the following:
  1. Completing a DESE-approved course of study specific to SEI;
  2. Passing an SEI MTEL;
  3. Holding a bachelor’s degree in a major approved by DESE or completing another graduate level
  4. training approved by the department that embodies the required standards (this includes the
  5. creation of a portfolio);

  6. Holding an English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) or an ELL license.

IMPORTANT FOR ALL - Once you’ve taken the approved DESE SEI endorsement course, apply
for your endorsement through ELAR. See the link above to find the “how to” resource.

Who is NOT required to get an SEI Endorsement?
The following are NOT required to get an SEI Endorsement:
  • Speech language pathologists
  • Paraprofessionals
  • Guidance Counselors
  • Substitute Teachers
  • Tutors School librarians
  • School nurses (not eligible to earn the SEI Endorsement)
  • Pre-service teachers
  • Retired educators and unemployed educators

What are the No-cost SEI Endorsement Courses?
One pathway for educators to obtain the SEI Endorsement is to take and pass the Department’s SEI
teacher course. The Department is in the process of hiring vendors to provide the SEI Endorsement
course to career vocational technical educators in the cohort at no cost for a limited period of time.

I’m worried that I need to take be full endorsed by June 2019.
How do I know if I had an EL student in my class in the 17-18 school year?
All EL students were place only with academic teachers with SEI endorsements, no academic
teachers are required to be endorsed by the end of this school year.  Even if there was an EL in their
program, CTE educators were not impacted in 17-18 SEI endorsement requirements for CTE started
in June 2018.

How do I know if I have an EL student scheduled in my class for the 18-19 school year?
There are 2-ways. First, Katie Berry will reach out to you directly by October 1, 2018. Secondly.
Lin Ann Hutchinson our ESL educators will be scheduled to your classroom.

What do I have to do if I have an EL in my classroom in the 18-19 school year? Academic
teachers must become endorsed within one calendar year, or by September 2019. CTE teachers
must be fully endorsed by June 2021.

I’d like to take an SEI endorsement course this year. What are my options?  DESE approved
professional development can be found on this  DESE RETELL LINK. As South Shore Tech learns
of offerenings in this area, we will be sure to communicate them to staff.
